A historic breakthrough in climate science with ULB leading the way!
An international team of researchers, representing 12 scientific institutions from 10 European countries, including ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles, has achieved an extraordinary milestone in Antarctica as part of the "𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗔 – 𝗢𝗹𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗰𝗲" project, funded by the European Commission. 🙌 🎉 𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱: drilling to a depth of 2,800 metres, where the Antarctic ice sheet meets the bedrock. These samples, dating back more than 1.2 million years, could reveal unprecedented insights into Earth's climate history and atmospheric evolution. 🔬 ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles Glaciology Laboratory, led by Professor Frank Pattyn, played a central role. For 10 years, his team has worked to identify areas suitable for recovering million-year-old ice, using geophysical studies and advanced radar technologies. Their efforts led to the selection of the strategic drilling site at Little Dome C. 🚢 The valuable ice cores, kept at -50°C, will soon be transported to Europe for in-depth analysis, paving the way for a better understanding of past and future climate changes. 👨🎓 Inspired to take part in scientific projects of this scale? Astronomers from the University of Liège have detected some of the smallest asteroids ever observed!
An international team including astronomers from the University of Liège have detected 138 new rocky bodies around ten metres in diameter in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. These are the smallest asteroids ever detected in this region. This discovery has important implications for the asteroid population and planetary defence, according to an article by the researchers published on Monday in the journal Nature.
