Selection Process

The selection panel mainly evaluates the quality and originality of the candidate's scientific achievements and his/her most important research achievements. Applications are evaluated according to a multi-stage procedure (described in detail in the Instructions for the Preparation of Applications), involving external experts and evaluators. The final decision on the award of the grant is taken by the Foundation's Administrative Board. It is approved by the FNP Council.

Notes: Applications for the START grant programme will also be taken into consideration for submission to the Barbara Skarga scholarship, which is awarded to one of the programme laureates for a given year. The winner of this scholarship can be a person whose research is distinguished by the courage to cross the boundaries between different scientific fields, to open up new research perspectives and to create new values in science. This person's scholarship will be increased.

The Foundation also awards distinctions to outstanding candidates whose research results have been rated highest by the evaluation panel in three areas: humanities and social sciences, natural and medical sciences, and exact and technical sciences. The amount of the scholarships for the winners is increased: in previous years they amounted to PLN 36,000.

Selected beneficiaries of the START programme also have the possibility of receiving an exit grant for a stay in one or two research centres abroad. The purpose of these trips is to establish cooperation and to learn the methods of research work in these centres. They will be selected from among the laureates who have declared their intention to undertake such a trip in the application form and have attached the required documents.
