FirstRand established its foundation in 1998 to uplift and improve the lives of many people in need in South Africa. One of the foundation’s programme is the FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar scholarship. The scholarship aims to provide South Africans with an opportunity to study a post-graduate degree at any recognised University worldwide.
For the duration of studies.
The scholarship has a value of R850 000 per annum.

FirstRand Limited was founded in 1970 as a specialist investment bank by GT Ferreira, Laurie Dippenaar and Paul Harris. FirstRand has its portfolio of operating franchises namely, First National Bank (FNB), Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), Wesbank and Ashburton Investments.

Preference will be given to candidates under the age of 35.
The successful candidates will have excelled academically in their chosen field and will have been able to demonstrate:
- leadership qualities;
- strength of character;
- community involvement;
- the potential to be a destiny changer in his or her chosen field.
Candidates who are currently, or have been studying overseas, will not be considered for this scholarship.
Successful candidates are required to return to South Africa for at least five years after completing their studies.
How to apply
Applications, including all attachments and reference letters, must be completed online and applicants must have applied directly to the university of their choice by the time the application is submitted.
Applications usually open in Mid-December and close in Mid-February.
Confirmation of each received application is emailed to the applicant upon receipt of his or her application.
All applications are evaluated by at least three preliminary evaluators from FirstRand, FNB, RMB, TSI and previous winners of the scholarship. A long list of around 40 applicants is then drawn up and interviewed in person in Cape Town or Sandton.
The shortlisted candidates selected for the FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar scholarship should be available for final interviews held in Sandton in Mid-April.
A final announcement is made before the end of June.
